28th Conference of the Parties (COP28)

Our dedicated project coordinator, Liesbeth Horckmans (VITO), will be a speaker at the upcoming 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Liesbeth will be representing our Carbon4Minerals project initiative at the COP28 EU side event, which is being organized in collaboration with DG CLIMA and DG Research&Innovation.

While COP is primarily centred around crucial negotiations, the European Union will also host 90+ side events on the most pressing climate-related issues. Side events can range from discussing the energy transition to how citizens can drive forward climate action and will feature an array of high-level speakers and expert voices.

The spotlight will be on energy-intensive industries, which are integral to Europe's industrial value chains but also responsible for 17% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU (2019). The key theme of the COP28 EU side events will revolve around the imperative need for these industries to transition towards renewable energies and hydrogen, thereby replacing fossil resources. Captured CO will also play a significant role, serving as feedstock in the production of chemicals and minerals. The successful demonstration of key technologies in the coming years is paramount for the establishment of competitive climate-neutral plants in the EU by 2050.

During this session, light will be shed on the remarkable contributions stemming from initiatives within the industry sector of the H2020 and Horizon Europe programmes. These initiatives, including our Carbon4Minerals project, focus on pioneering research and innovation in decarbonization technologies and sustainable business practices tailored for energy-intensive industries. Attendees can anticipate insightful presentations showcasing European projects that emphasize processes integrating energy efficiency, and electrification coupled with renewables, hydrogen utilization, and carbon capture and utilization.
