Introducing VITO

Introducing Carbon4Minerals project coordinator - VITO.

VITO is an independent Flemish research organization focusing on applied research to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world. VITO aims to de-risk innovation for businesses and strengthen the economic and societal fabric of Flanders, with interdisciplinary research and large-scale pilot installations. VITO employs 1300 staff, of which 135 were PhDs and postdocs, of 61 nationalities, and is present on 3 continents. In 2023, VITO’s research produced 277 scientific publications, 35 patents, created 2 spin-offs and booked a revenue of 268 M€.  

Role in the project

In Carbon4Minerals, apart from coordinating the project, VITO contributes to different technologies:

• VITO will apply its expertise on material shaping to develop and upscale a novel CO2-sorption technology based on solid sorbents. Porous structured sorbents will be first be developed and tested at lab-scale, and then applied in a carbon capture pilot system.  

• VITO will apply its internationally recognized expertise on mineral carbonation in different applications within the Carbon4Minerals project. Mineral carbonation will be applied to develop a range of low carbon binders, including carbonation clinker, SCMs created by carbonation of steel slags, and pre-shaped mineral carbonation products. All these technologies will be upscaled in the project.
