Introducing ArcelorMittal Belgium
Introducing Carbon4Minerals consortium member - ArcelorMittal Belgium.
ArcelorMittal Belgium comprises of 5 different sites with 5.800 employees in total. Today, its Belgium facilities encompass Flat Carbon Steel operations, as well as state-of-the-art research centers, in Gent and Liège. The shipments of its 5 facilities located in Gent, Genk, Geel, Liège are in total more than 6 million tons per year.
The team members of the ArcelorMittal innovation team are based at the site in Gent, responsible for coordinating the project. The team consists of engineers that are experienced in managing innovative, and specifically CO₂ related projects. ArcelorMittal Belgium has its own engineering team (+100 FTEs) that manages the design, purchase and realization of new installations and handle changes on existing equipment.
Role in the project
ArcelorMittal has a carbon footprint of approximately 10 Mt/a CO₂. AMB is developing many pathways to reduce these emissions.
One vector in the decarb plan is to capture the CO₂ and use it for carbonation of the carbonation of AM’s own steel mill slags. AM has tested several capture technologies (amine, membrane, PSA) and is still in search of novel capture methods which require less energy like the one of VITO and Carbonoro.
In Carbon4Minerals, AMB will supply the steel mill slags (from BOF and EAF) for the carbonation trials by the project partners. By the production of carbonates, the CO₂ is permanently stored, and valuable products are produced that can serve as feedstock for e.g. brick production.
